[For a few seconds, Ford doesn't respond. He doesn't even blink. He just sort of stares mindlessly until finally something inside his head seems to click, and suddenly the lights turn back on.]

[He looks from his hand, to Roland, then back to his hand, before drawing said appendage a little closer to himself and pointedly looking anywhere BUT at Roland.]

Well. That certainly was a thing that happened. Just now. For some reason.

[Looks like that reboot wasn't all that successful after all. Speech.exe is failing to respond.]

[He watches Ford fumble with an almost analytical expression, one Ford himself may be familiar with. He isn't a man of science but he is a man of observation, and he can tell quite a lot about a man from the way he acts and speaks in much the same way that Ford can tell a lot about a mathematical equation by the way it's written on the board.]

..."Bothered" isn't exactly the word I would use.

["Confused" would be more fitting. "Baffled" would be even better. "It shocked me stupid" would be the most accurate, but Ford really hasn't recovered enough of his brainpower in order to string that sentence together.]

[He isn't going to outright say why, even though he very well knows by this point. He has a suspicion that would just put the other man on the defensive, and he's in no mood to deal with that over something that to him is such a non-issue. Ford's going to have to say it himself.]

[Roland's got a keen eye. Ford already looks a bit cagey, and creeping any closer to the unspoken Sore Subject would most certainly put him on the defensive.]

Typically people don't ask me that question for good reasons.

[Aaaand that is the closest he's going to get to addressing the subject. In fact, he's going to backpedal away from it now before Roland can get the chance to poke at his cryptic response.]

That aside - why on Earth would someone ask you to do that?

[Even more importantly: why did they have to specifically say on the hand.]

In my when a kiss on the hand is an expression of respect and affection. Usually reserved for women, but, ah. Might be different in this when.

[My god, Ford, for a man with twelve doctorates you are remarkably unobservant. Were you just not around for the entire fight with that Chameleon monster, and afterward when he specifically made a point of apologizing for doubting you?

True, there are parts of Ford that are flawed. He lets his ego and his own emotions rule him, something Roland thinks is unbelievably foolish -- but Eddie let his emotions rule him, and that didn't diminish his potential any. Even in someone so flawed there is something worth respecting. With time that something can be brought forward and the flaws can be controlled and made into tools.]

[Ford will admit, he's not the best at the whole "recognizing and understanding social clues" thing. In fact, he's...kind of really bad at picking up on seemingly obvious things.]

[He supposes that's just what happens when your social circle for your formative years is limited entirely to a single person. You never really figure out how to pick up on anyone else's tells.]

I had assumed it went without saying.

[And by that, he means he didn't think Roland would ever say it like that.]

[His first response is to open his mouth to give a sharp retort, one finger raised as he prepares to dismiss that idea outright.]

[If Roland were another man, he'd be raising his eyebrows in an exaggerated and incredibly sarcastic expression right now. He isn't, but some of that disbelief is still audible in his voice.]

What track ought we to be on, then? You can dance around this as long as you like, Stanford, but sooner or later your legs are going to tire.

[He wasn't gonna make a big deal about it, but he's backed into a corner now and he can't NOT wig out a little about it.]

[Alright. Clearly Ford isn't going to get there on his own, either by choice or because he's so far in denial that he honestly can't do it. Either way Roland is tired of seeing him make increasingly transparent attempts to deflect the issue.]
