And some are always longer than others. Probably a good thing she's got some gravity powers, because it'd be way safer to just levitate them rather than risk touching them.
And they could, perhaps, have some control over that -- the precise shape they take -- but the thing is, they'd probably have to focus on the orbs themselves in order to do so. And again, there's that overly self-confident air you mentioned, so that they're inclined to think they don't have to worry about that. (And accidentally cutting themselves on one of the pair of spiky orbs' many, many edges would be a good way to shock them out right out of their fusion...)
